SmackDown 4/23/10

Smackdown opens with Swagger coming out to the ring. Swagger brags about going toe to toe with the Undertaker and plays a video of some of the highlights of the match. Swagger says that Orton is a viper whose venom can stop a man in 3 very fast seconds. Swagger says he is the antidote and he will go for the viper’s neck and cut its head off. Morrison comes out for a match with Swagger.

Swagger and Morrison trade some traditional mat wrestling moves with Swagger getting the better of Morrison. They return to their feet and Swagger takes Morrison back to the mat with a scoop slam. Swagger misses a big leg drop and Morrison catches him with a big knee to the face and gets a 2 count. Morrison picks up some momentum and charges at Swagger, but Swagger counters with a move that is like a belly to belly slam into a spinebuster. Smackdown returns with Morrison in a body scissors from Swagger. Morrison fights out, but Swagger catches him with a forearm shot. Swagger sets him up on the top rope and goes for a superplex, but Morrison fights back. Morrison hits a missile dropkick on Swagger to earn another 2 count. Morrison rolls Swagger up with a magistral cradle, but Swagger still kicks out at 2. Morrison goes for the Chuck Kick, but Swagger counters with a big kick to Morrison’s abdomen and gains a 2 count. Swagger hits a pair of elbow drops and a big double leg drop for another 2 count. Swagger gets an armlock crossface (it’s like a modified crossface chicken wing) on Morrison. Morrison fight out but Swagger counters an attack with a wheelbarrow suplex. Swagger returns to the armlock crossface. Morrison fights out. He charges at Swagger and while Swagger tries to counter with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, Morrison counters into a DDT. Morrison goes after Swagger. He throws Swagger out of the ring and Swagger lands on the apron. Swagger tries to spring back in, but Morrison answers with a kick to Swagger’s abdomen. Swagger starts to fight back, but Morrison catches him with the Flying Chuck and gets a 2 count. Swagger finally manages to catch Morrison with the Gutwrench Powerbomb, but Morrison grabs the ropes to break up the count. Swagger attempts the Oklahoma Stampede, but Morrison fights out. Morrison hits the PelĂ© kick. Morrison follows up with Starship Pain and covers Swagger for the 3 count and the pin.

Move of the Match: Lots of great moves in this match. I like Swagger’s new wear down submission and the Gutwrench Powerbomb is always impressive, but you can’t get much more impressive than Starship Pain.

Backstage, Punk complains to Teddy Long that he has “a little sociopathic gremlin in a mask” cutting people’s hair with scissor. Punk says Mysterio did it because he knows he can’t beat Punk at Extreme Rules. Long makes a tag team match tonight. CM Punk and Luke Gallows will take on Rey Mysterio and his partner, “a handsome, distinguished debonair, with no hair,” Kane.

Up next R-Truth and Matt Hardy are taking on Intercontinental Champion Drew McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler in a tag team match. R-Truth takes control early with a side headlock on Ziggler. He rolls Ziggler up for a quick 2 count. R-Truth tags in Hardy. Ziggler sends R-Truth into the corner and follows after. Float over, cartwheel and R-Truth dodges a clothesline from Ziggler who is caught and dropped across the ropes by Hardy. Hardy tries to take a shot at Drew, but Drew drops off the apron to avoid it. Back from break, Ziggler and Hardy trade blows. Hardy gets the advantage and drops Ziggler in the corner. An alley oop into a powerbomb earns Hardy a 2 count. Hardy goes for a Side Effect, but Ziggler fights out and sends Hardy shoulder first into the ring post. Hardy rolls out and leans on the ring steps. The referee is arguing with Ziggler, and Drew moves over and stomps Hardy’s head into the steel steps. The referee sees Hardy is down on the outside and asks if he wants to continue. Hardy nods to indicate he does. Ziggler rolls Hardy back into the ring and covers him, but only gets a 2 count. The referee checks on Hardy’s condition again and decides to end the match. Ziggler and Drew win by referee stoppage.

Move of the Match: This has to go to the stomp from Drew to Hardy on the ring steps. Although this was a disturbing action on the part of Drew, it also did the damage necessary to for the referee to stop the match.

After the match, Drew grabs Hardy and slams him into the ring steps.

Chris Jericho and Wade Barrett come out to the ring as the cage is lowered. Jericho says he will end Edge’s career at Extreme Rules. Jericho talks about using the cage as a weapon. He says he will take advantage of the cage to tear Edge’s Achilles tendon again and put him on the shelf for good. Edge comes out to the top of the ramp. Edge says nothing is going to stop him from getting inside the steel cage at Extreme Rules. Edge says that Chris keeps saying how he’ll reinjure Edge, but Edge knows how to deal with an injury and Jericho doesn’t. Edge says nothing will stop him this Sunday from spearing Jericho through the cage. He then says nothing will stop him from Spearing Jericho right now. Edge attacks Jericho and Barrett. Jericho and Barrett double team Edge, targeting his left leg. Edge fights back and kicks Jericho into the cage. He hits the Edge-O-Matic on Barrett and sets up to spear Jericho. Jericho escapes through the cage door and holds it closed. Barrett tries to get Jericho to let him out, but Jericho refuses because Edge is right behind Barrett. Edge repeatedly sends Barrett into the cage, and then spears him.

Up next JTG is taking on Mike Knox. Shad is at ringside for this match. JTG starts out with quick punches to Knox, but Knox follows up with the “Flying Bear” crossbody. Knox hits a big splash on JTG and covers for a 1 count. JTG fights back and hits a diving shoulder block/neckbreaker type move. He sets up Knox in the corner and hits the Mug Shot. Knox rolls out of the ring, but JTG follows up with a slingshot crossbody to Knox on the outside. Knox tries to fight back, but JTG catches him with the Shout Out and covers for the 3 count.

Move of the match: Got to give this to the Shout Out. It’s an impressive move and is fun to watch.

After the match, Shad hits the ring and attacks JTG with the leather strap.

Team LayCool is taking on Mickie James and Beth Phoenix. Layla and Beth start out the match. Layla gets a side headlock, and Beth swings her around in a circle. Beth tosses Layla off and goes after her, but Layla answers with kicks to Beth. McCool tags in while Beth catches Layla and performs a giant swing. Beth picks up Layla in a military press, but McCool kicks her in the back of the knee. McCool proceeds to focus the attack on Beth’s knee. McCool tags Layla back in and Layla continues the attack on Beth’s knee. Beth is finally able to tag in Mickie. Mickie hits a series of attacks on Layla and then takes a shot at McCool on the apron. Mickie hits a diving seated senton to Layla and covers. McCool kicks Mickie in the head, breaking up the count. Beth sends McCool out of the ring and Layla takes advantage to hit Mickie with her sit out neckbreaker (which Matt Striker has dubbed the Layout.) Layla covers for the 3 count.

Move of the Match: Couple of good moves, but this has to go either to the diving seated senton from Mickie to Layla, or the neckbreaker from Layla to Mickie.

Post match, Team LayCool puts Beth Phoenix through an ironing board. Then McCool hits her with the big boot and they put lipstick all over her face.

Up next the SES is taking on Rey Mysterio and Kane. Punk says that come Sunday, he will let his actions speak. Punk says that when Sunday is over, his hair will remain. Punk initially says that someone will join the SES tonight, but Mysterio comes out. Gallows and Mysterio start out the match in the ring. Mysterio starts out with a series of quick kicks, regaining distance after each one. Punk distracts Mysterio allowing Gallows to hit a big punch and follow up with a scoop slam. Pair of elbow drops and Gallows tags in Punk. Punk goes after Mysterio and sends him into the turnbuckles. Series of forearm shots and Punk goes for a back suplex, but Mysterio flips out of it and tags in Kane. Back from break and Kane and Gallows are in the ring. Kane has a side headlock, but Gallows shoots him off and catches him with a clothesline. Gallows tags in Punk. Punk tries to slingshot into the ring, but is caught with an uppercut from Kane. Kane tags in Mysterio. Series of moves ends with Punk hitting his knee in the corner followed by a bulldog. Bow and arrow type hold from Punk on Mysterio. Mysterio fights back, but is caught with a back elbow. Punk brings Mysterio to the corner and tags in Gallows. Double teaming tactics in the corner lead to a 2 count for Gallows. Double arm choke from Gallows to Mysterio. Mysterio fights back and counters a powerslam attempt with a DDT. Mysterio tags in Kane and Gallows tags in Punk. Punk hesitates and Kane takes control. Clothesline in the corner and a side slam set Kane up for the Flying Clothesline. He hits it and covers for 2, but Gallows breaks it up. Gallows turns his attention to Mysterio who pulls down on the ropes sending Gallows out of the ring. Punk tries to fight back, but eats a big boot from Kane. Kane tags in Mysterio and Mysterio hits a splash off of Kane’s shoulders, but only gets a 2 count. Mysterio sets up for the 619, but Serena distracts the referee and Gallows pulls Mysterio out of the ring. Kane goes after Gallows on the outside. Mysterio returns to the ring, but Punk catches him with a series of shots. Mysterio attempts a springboard moonsault onto Punk, but Punk catches him on his shoulders. Mysterio escapes the GTS and tries to roll Punk up, but Punk drops down and holds Mysterio down for the 3 count.

Move of the Match: This has to go to the diving splash Mysterio performed off of Kane’s shoulders.

After the match, Punk continues to attack Mysterio. Mysterio counters and attack by dropkicking Punk. Punk is set up for the 619, but slides out of the ring before Mysterio can hit it. Mysterio baseball slides Punk into the barber’s chair that is at ringside. He grabs the clippers, but Serena stops Mysterio from cutting Punk’s hair. Mysterio stands on the barber’s chair holding the clippers as Smackdown ends.
