SmackDown 4/16/10

SmackDown is opened with Jericho complaining about Orton getting the title shot and saying that the World Heavyweight Championship should be defended against a SmackDown superstar. Jericho says that Teddy Long is “the most incompetent buffoon that’s ever held a position of power.” Jericho says Long needs to hand in his resignation and ensure that Jericho should face the winner of Orton and Swagger right after their match at Extreme Rule. Edge comes out to interrupt Jericho. Edge calls Jericho damaged goods and says that if someone should get the match it’s him because Jericho can’t beat Orton or Swagger, but he can. Teddy Long comes out and announces that Jericho will get his championship rematch tonight. Teddy Long makes the match a Triple Threat with Swagger defending against Jericho and Edge.

Drew McIntyre comes out for his match. He comments on the fact that the people don’t like him and says, “I don’t like you either.” Drew’s opponent for this match is Kane. McIntyre gains control early by backing Kane into the corner, but Kane fight’s back, and after a few big rights, nails Drew with a powerful hip toss. Side headlock from Kane, and when Drew shoots Kane off, he runs into a shoulder block. Kane maintains control and hits the snapmare followed by his low dropkick. Drew avoids the splash in the corner and catches Kane with a big boot. McIntyre drops Kane neck first across his knee, and then moves back into the corner. Kane comes back with a big boot of his own followed by a big clothesline in the corner. Kane hits the side slam and covers for 2. Kane hits the flying clothesline and signals for the chokeslam, but McIntyre slides out of the ring. McIntyre tries to walk out and Matt Hardy rushes in and slides McIntyre back into the ring where he gets caught with a chokeslam from Kane. The referee rules the match a disqualification due to outside interference. McIntyre wins.

Move of the Match: If we’re only including moves in the match, this either has to go to Kane’s flying clothesline or McIntyre’s neckbreaker move. I’m going to give it to the neckbreaker onto the knee due to the fact that it is a somewhat unique move.

After the match, Kane gets mad that Hardy cost him the match and chokeslams Matt Hardy too.

In the back, Swagger comes back to complain to Teddy Long about the triple threat, but Long tells him that as long as he holds the World Heavyweight Title, he has to deal with Long’s rulings.

Dolph Ziggler comes out and gives a half hearted apology for putting Josh Matthews in the sleeper hold last week. R-Truth is Ziggler’s opponent for this match. R-Truth says Ziggler has no heart, no soul and has never been sincere or humble about anything in his life. R-Truth says Ziggler is about to find out that the truth hurts. Ziggler starts things out by offering R-Truth a handshake, then attacking him while he considers shaking Ziggler’s hand. Ziggler hits his inverted bodyslam. R-Truth begins to fight back and hits a few clotheslines. Some acrobatic moves and R-Truth hits a corkscrew calf kick. Hip toss and R-Truth attempts the Lie Detector, but Ziggler ducks out of the way. Ziggler gets the sleeper hold locked in on R-Truth, and R-Truth tries to fight back, but Ziggler gets the leg scissors and makes R-Truth pass out.

Move of the Match: Gotta give this to the sleeper hold. This is one of those moves that is not fancy, and it’s not pretty, but it’s effective.

Mickie James is taking on Michelle McCool next. McCool tosses Mickie and does some push-ups intending to taunt her, but Mickie gets down eye to eye with her doing push-ups of her own. McCool is distracted and Mickie hits a low dropkick to a McCool (who is kneeling.) Mickie hits a couple quick covers, but McCool fights back. Mickie goes for a DDT out of the corner on McCool, but McCool counters and stands Mickie on the apron. McCool sends Mickie into the ring post, then drags her back into the ring. McCool locks in a figure four head scissors on Mickie. The referee catches McCool using the ropes for leverage and makes her break the hold. Mickie tries to fight back, but McCool nails her with kicks and a big knee to the head. Mickie fights out of the corner with a huracanrana. Mickie goes after McCool, and when she slides out of the ring, Mickie follows her and sends her into the barrier. Diving Lou Thez Press off the barrier, and a Lou Thez Press for Layla when she tries to get involved. Mickie counters a clothesline with a neckbreaker for a 1 count on McCool, but breaks the hold when Layla gets up on the ropes. She kicks Layla causing her to fall into the ring, then rolls her out of the ring. Mickie turns around and takes a big boot from McCool. McCool covers for the win.

Move of the Match: I kinda want to give it to the diving Lou Thez Press, but I think I’ll give it to the big boot because the move itself was wicked.

Post match, McCool continues the attack on Mickie. Beth Phoenix hits the ring and Team LayCool takes off running.

Luke Gallows is backstage with Darren Young. Gallows tells Young that if he gets the chance he will shave Young’s head. Young asks Gallows how it feels to lose to an NXT Rookie. Punk stops them from fighting telling them that if they want to fight somebody, they should save it for their match.

Punk locks in a figure four neck lock, but Kidd bridges his back and gets a 1 count on Punk. Punk hits a scoop slam on Kidd and tags in Young. Young goes for a leg drop off the second rope, but Kidd moves. Young makes the tag and Punk takes out Rey, but turns into a spinning heel kick from Kidd. Kidd tags in Smith. Smith attacks Punk, and takes Young off the apron. Punk tries to roll Smith up, but Smith counters for a 2 count. Punk sends Smith off and he almost collides with Gallows, who drops off the apron to avoid collision. Kidd comes out of nowhere with a rolling kick from the apron onto Gallows. Smith turns around and gets hit with a big kick from Punk. Punk covers, but only gets a 2 count. Drop toe hold from Smith sends Punk into the second turnbuckle. Serena distracts Smith and the referee by trying to climb into the ring. Mysterio comes across the ring apron and hits the 619 around the ring post. Smith nails Punk with the running powerslam and covers to win the match.

Move of the Match: This is one of those matches where there were a lot of great and impressive moves. The variation of the 619 takes the Move of the Match as, although Rey has hit that variation before, it is rarely seen and quite impressive.

Backstage, Jericho is talking to Wade Barrett and says that he will become a 7 time world champion tonight.

JTG vs. Caylen Croft. Shad comes out to the ramp distracting JTG and Croft gets control early. Croft hits a series of clotheslines and shoulder blocks on JTG. Unique Russian Legsweep into a clothesline from Croft. JTG tries to fight back, but Croft keeps maintaining control. Croft shoots JTG off and JTG comes back with an uppercut to croft. JTG goes for a neckbreaker, and Croft tries to counter, but JTG counters back and hits the neckbreaker. JTG goes for the Mug Shot out of the corner, but Croft fights back and hits a neckbreaker on JTG. JTG fights back and hits the Shout Out, and covers for the win.

Move of the Match: Although Croft had a few interesting and somewhat unique moves, I’ve got to call it for the Shout Out.

After the match, Shad enters the ring and nails JTG with a big clothesline. Shad continues to attack JTG, but JTG fights back and hits the Mug Shot out of the corner, followed by a series of punches and a dropkick that sends Shad out of the ring.

Edge hits a baseball slide on both men and moves to the ring side area. Edge sends Jericho into the barrier and turns his attention to Swagger. Edge sends Swagger back into the ring, but before he can get back in, Jericho attacks him. Jericho tries to go to the ring, but Swagger catches him on the apron and tries to suplex him into the ring, but Jericho blocks. Jericho tries to suplex Swagger out, but Swagger blocks. Edge pulls Jericho’s legs off the apron causing Jericho to go down on the outside and to hit a hot shot on Swagger at the same time. Back from break and Edge and Swagger are in the ring. Edge goes arm first into the ring post and continues to work on Edge’s arm. Swagger gets a backbreaker and a 2 count on Edge. He slams Edge into the barrier and slides into the ring. Swagger rushes into the ring and covers Jericho for 3 to retain the title.

Move of the Match: Lots of great moves including Edge and Jericho pulling out moves of theirs that we don’t see all the time. I’ve got to call the spear the move of the match as it allowed Swagger to pick up the win on Jericho.

Post match, Swagger brings Edge back into the ring and nails him with the Gutwrench Powerbomb. Jericho pulls Edge to the corner and sets up his leg between the steel steps and the ring post, then nails it with a big kick. Jericho leaves Edge in pain in the ring and walks away to end SmackDown.
